Launched in 2001, the .NAME universal domain name extension is the sole TLD meant for personal websites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other designations people are popular by. At first, solely third-level registrations were allowed, so if you planned to acquire john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already registered 3rd-level domain names remained running.
